Construction

Construction Scaffolding boards were not properly supported

A system scaffold with a cup-lock arrangement had been erected at a detached house in Derby, but the boards which had been put into place on the scaffolding were insufficiently supported causing one of the workmen to fall five metres and suffer spinal injuries, which left him paralysed below the waist.

The developers were subsequently fined £7000 for two charges under the Construction (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1996 for breaches of reg.6(1) in failing to take steps to prevent falls from the scaffold and of reg.29(1) in not ensuring scaffolding had been inspected before use. Costs of £1789 were awarded to the Health and Safety Executive.
